The Capri modelled was produced at Ford’s Cologne plant, Germany, on 22nd November 1977, one of approximately one hundred 3.0S Mk2s dispatched to Zakspeed’s facility in Niederzissen to be turned into Capri “Spezials”. This involved fitting the Series-X body kit, Bilstein suspension, an anti-dive kit, 7.5” x 13” Ronal alloys, ventilated front discs, Scheel seats, an RS steering wheel and graphics.

The “Spezials” cost DM 28,000, over 30% more than a standard 3.0S. This example was purchased by an RAF serviceman, from a Ford Dealership in Gütersloh. He brought it home to Britain in 1992, allegedly in a Hercules, and it was left untouched until purchased by another RAF officer who intended to restore it. He offered it for sale in 2015, unrestored but including all the essential “Spezial” parts, and it was purchased by Berkshire-based Capri enthusiast Nick Campbell.

He stripped it for restoration in 2020 and found the bodyshell in sound condition, although needing various NOS panels. All the mechanical components were stripped and rebuilt, and the restored body was then resprayed before he reassembled the car. Initially, he struggled to find any 235/60VR13 tyres, but historic racer Julian Majzub’s Blockley Tyre Company produced a batch as the restorer of Walter Rohrl’s Opel Ascona rally car had also requested a set.

The Capri was finished in the summer of 2023, and always draws a crowd being the only UK-based “Spezial”, and one of only seven known worldwide.
